Krittikais which attract a large number of devotees to this shrine, the two outstanding annual festivals are the Aadi Krittikai and the 31st of December New Year Step Festival. There are large water tanks in and around the temple. Next to the presiding deity, there is a shrine dedicated to Lord Ganesh as well. The gold jewellery and garland decoration of the main idol further adds to its grandeur. The architecture of the temple and its gopurams (towers) and the sculpture of statues are eye-catching. The most powerful weapon of Skanda is the sakthi Vel with the Tamil OM engraved, and is placed diagonally to the right of the statue. His lower right hand shows Abhaya mudra, and his lower left hand shows Varada mudra. Likewise the weapons on his left hands arranged from top to bottom are trishul (trident), conch, pasha (noose), shield, and a bow. The right hands of Skanda holds the following weapons arranged from top to bottom - soola kathi (diamond shaped sword), chakra (wheel), ankusha (goad), sword and an arrow. The peacock is always seen with its feet gripping onto a small serpent. Skanda is standing on an inverted lotus pedestal with his vahana, the peacock standing behind him. Skanda was born from Lord Shiva’s seed when dropped into River Ganges by Agni He was born to destroy the demon Taraka, who had been granted a boon that he could be destroyed only by the son of Lord Shiva.
